TikTok has finally added group chat features along with new adolescent safety precautions.

TikTok users, we’ve taken note of your requests. The social video behemoth revealed today that a much-anticipated feature—group chat—will finally be included in a future version. Without switching apps, Group Chat will enable users to share their favorite movies, the newest trends, and the best memes with their pals.

This group chat feature won’t be available to everyone, though, just like TikTok’s direct texting feature.

Users under the age of 15 are not permitted to participate in group conversations on TikTok, and safeguards have been put in place to prevent users under the age of 18 from participating in “shared viewing experiences” of group chats, which enable users to watch and respond in real time.

Only friends—that is, those they follow who follow them—can add users to a group chat. Furthermore, minors under the age of eighteen can only join a group chat through a link if there is a mutual buddy available. In these situations, teens are not automatically added to the group; instead, they must voluntarily join, and every teen who starts a chat must check and approve all new members.

Safety versus social interaction

Not all of TikTok’s actions are selfless. It will undoubtedly save users the few seconds it takes to share a link in a different chat app, but it also makes it less necessary to exit the TikTok app, which keeps users more interested in its algorithm.

However, the fact that TikTok is taking action to improve user safety for younger users is hopeful for a company that has been controversial from its founding and is currently being sued by the US Justice Department for “widespread violations of children’s privacy laws.”

The minimum age threshold on TikTok is already 13, and users under 16 are not allowed to access risky features like direct chat and live streaming. It may be argued, however, that these protections are compromised by the simplicity with which a 13-year-old can misrepresent their age in order to obtain access to content that is banned. Because of this, it is essential to include extra security safeguards for all users, such as needing mutual friendships before adding someone to a group chat.
